Offering condolences today to all my teacher friends whose summers went by all too quickly.
Why are their hearts heavy? Because they get essays with … ummm … colorful metaphors like these? And by colorful, I mean “Wow. Is it going to be looooong school year.”
Her face was a perfect oval, like a circle that had its two other sides gently compressed by a Thigh Master.
McMurphy fell 12 stories, hitting the pavement like a paper bag filled with vegetable soup.
Her hair glistened in the rain like nose hair after a sneeze.
Long separated by cruel fate, the star-crossed lovers raced across the grassy field toward each other like two freight trains, one having left New York at 6:36 PM traveling west at 55 mph, the other from Chicago at 4:19 PM traveling east at a speed of 35 mph.
The plan was simple, like my brother Phil. But unlike Phil, this plan just might work.
He was as lame as a duck. Not the metaphorical lame duck either, but a real duck that was actually lame. Maybe from stepping on a land mine or something.
She had a deep, throaty, genuine laugh, like that sound a dog makes just before it throws up.
The ballerina rose gracefully en pointe and extended one slender leg behind her, like a dog at a lamppost.
She grew on him like she was a colony of E. coli and he was room-temperature beef.
She walked into my office like a centipede with 98 missing legs.
It hurt the way your tongue hurts after you accidentally staple it to the wall.

Hi there. Hope all’s well. Tomorrow I celebrate 26 years with my husband and best friend. Time flies. I can remember when our children were the ages of these four to eight year olds who were asked: “What does love mean?”
Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and they go out and smell each other.
Kari - age 5
Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your french fries without making them give you any of theirs.
Chrissy - age 6
Love is what makes you smile when you’re tired.
Terri - age 4
When my grandma got arthritis, she couldn’t bend over and paint her toe nails anymore. So my grandpa does it for her now all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That’s love. Rebecca - age 8
Love is what’s in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen.
Bobby - age 7
Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it every day.
Noelle - age 7
Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well.
Tommy - age 6
Love is when mommy gives daddy the best piece of chicken.
Elaine - age 5
Love is when mommy sees daddy smelly and sweaty and still says he is handsomer than Robert Redford.
Chris - age 7
When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you.
Karen - age 7
You really shouldn’t say “I LOVE YOU” unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget.
Jessica - age 8

Right on, Jessica. Right on.
And when you get close – how’s this for a not-so-subtle-segue – might I suggest kisses powered by sugar-free treats from Epic Dental?

Inexpensive Anniversary Ideas: These are awfully good. And here’s the thing – your anniversary not coming up? Even better, then, to give them a “Just Because” surprise gift.
RIP John Hughes: I’m sure you probably heard that the guy who shaped my youth passed away. The Chicago filmmaker – in his later years – was a known recluse, but this woman came forward to tell a really neat story about her fan relationship with him over the years.
Gatti’s Pizza Jingle Contest: This is a pizza place down in Austin, Texas, and evidently they’ve had the same commercial jingle for years, and they invited people to come up with a new one. I got sucked in to listening to a bazillion of them … ymmv.
ABC’s new Modern Family: This show’s going to be a critical AND popular hit. You heard it here first. J
