STSA # 56: We Remember

Something to Smile About :)

When you have a father in the Marine Corps, you learn at a very early age to hold Memorial Day in a certain reverence.

In our family, we remember, we commemorate, and we’re so grateful to the ones who died so that we could live free and enjoy our home in this great country.

This is a little bit longer than usual, and it’s also more serious than usual. We’ll get back to quick and smiley in a couple weeks. In the meantime, here’s a bit I love and remember from Andy Rooney.

Bet We Can Get You to Smile Again, Visit Epic Dental!

Tomorrow is Memorial Day, the day we have set aside to honor by remembering all the Americans who have died fighting for the thing we like the most about our America: the freedom we have to live as we please.

No official day to remember is adequate for something like that. It’s too formal. It gets to be just another day on the calendar. No one would know from Memorial Day that Richie M., who was shot through the forehead coming onto Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944, wore different color socks on each foot because he thought it brought him good luck.

No one would remember on Memorial Day that Eddie G. had promised to marry Julie W. the day after he got home from the war, but didn’t marry Julie because he never came home from the war. Eddie was shot dead on an un-American desert island, Iwo Jima.

For too many Americans, Memorial Day has become just another day off. There’s only so much time any of us can spend remembering those we loved who have died, but the men, boys really, who died in our wars deserve at least a few moments of reflection during which we consider what they did for us.

They died.

We use the phrase “gave their lives,” but they didn’t give their lives. Their lives were taken from them.

There is more bravery at war than in peace, and it seems wrong that we have so often saved this virtue to use for our least noble activity - war. The goal of war is to cause death to other people.

Because I was in the Army during World War II, I have more to remember on Memorial Day than most of you. I had good friends who were killed.

Charley Wood wrote poetry in high school. He was killed when his Piper Cub was shot down while he was flying as a spotter for the artillery.

Bob O’Connor went down in flames in his B-17.

Obie Slingerland and I were best friends and co-captains of our high school football team. Obie was killed on the deck of the Saratoga when a bomb that hadn’t dropped exploded as he landed.

I won’t think of them anymore tomorrow, Memorial Day, than I think of them any other day of my life.

Remembering doesn’t do the remembered any good, of course. It’s for ourselves, the living. I wish we could dedicate Memorial Day, not to the memory of those who have died at war, but to the idea of saving the lives of the young people who are going to die in the future if we don’t find some new way - some new religion maybe - that takes war out of our lives.

That would be a Memorial Day worth celebrating.

I know – definitely different than what I usually send. I hope you don’t mind, and I’ll look forward to getting back to belly laughs and big smiles next time.

Speaking of big smiles, thanks once again to our friends at Epic Dental! They didn’t have to allow us to write about something some might consider a little controversial, but they supported it enthusiastically. Thanks, Guys and Gals!

STSA #55: Things Mom Would Never Say

Something to Smile About :)

Okay, so Mother’s Day is Sunday, and below we give you some things you’d never hear mom say … … and they’re funny.

It’s just not what we were going to send you. We decided not to send you what we originally put together because, well, because it’s a little bit (like maybe rated PG-11) dirty. A little. My mom thought it was funny. My 23-year-old daughter thought it was funny.

SO … if you think you might be offended, please do NOT click this link to see the alternate rated PG-11 Mother’s Day Something to Smile About.

In its honor, here are some other things mom would never say.

Bet We Can Get You to Smile Again, Visit Epic Dental!

1.”How on earth can you see the TV sitting so far back?”

2.”Yeah, I used to skip school a lot, too”

3.”Just leave all the lights on … it makes the house look more cheery”

4.“Rated R? Heck, go! You can’t spell “rowdy” without an ‘R’!”

5.”Let me smell that shirt — Yeah, it’s good for another week”

6.”Go ahead and keep that stray dog, honey. I’ll be glad to feed and walk him every day”

7.”Well, if Timmy’s mom says it’s OK, that’s good enough for me.”

8.”The curfew is just a general time to shoot for. It’s not like I’m running a prison around here.”

9.”I don’t have a tissue with me … just use your sleeve”

10.”Don’t bother wearing a jacket - the wind-chill is bound to improve”

Great, eh? As are our moms, everywhere. They say the darndest things sometimes to get us to comply.

Ha! My mom – a retired nurse – used to tell us not to complain before shots or the nurse would switch to dull needles … that hurt more. Meanie …

If your smile, breath, and mouth need a little health and wellness, may I remind you to visit our friends at Epic Dental! They can help freshen your breath and brighten your smile to match the warm, sweet sun of Spring.
